you could try a white shower curtain liner it is white and translucent so it will pass the light. You could use multiple layers folded to add more diffusion and hold back additional light. Walmart and Target or Kmart sell these for around $5.00. Check out this site he uses a shower curtain http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A03Bfq1NxWk

Also, if you have a stage theater in town, try the several theater supply stores. They often have lots of good stuff, much of it on sale because it was used for the production but is still in excellent shape.

Yes, nylon works well and lasts. For cheap get cheese cloth which drapes well so you can double and triple if need to control lumens. A simple bent wire frame and clothes pegs make a cheap, effective and easily packed awat setup.
With any keep away from intense heat. If you must get hot try dacron. Muslin NG because of colour.

white shower curtain or a sheet, would probably work. you can also pick up nylon or bleached muslin in any fabric store. In a pinch you can use a large sheet of paper. You can also use the plastic that covers lighting fixtures.

Not sure if you found what you were looking for yet, but I just finished making my own diffusion panels and used white rip-stop nylon. This is the exact material used in professional softboxes. You can order it at http://www.fabric.com for about $5.50 per yard, and they ship FAST.

I like to use the cheapest Walmart white cotton sheets I can find, usually at $1.97 each. They work surprisingly well and I don't care if they get dirty or damaged, they are easy to replace. Just cut out the size you need and save the rest for replacement material. I have made softboxes for studio shots of cars and motorcycles this way and you would be amazed at how they compared to $12,000 Pro softboxes!
