Just a quick test to match one I did with the SX40 to show the range of the lens.
#1 - widest angle (24mm equiv)
#2 - longest OPTICAL (1200mm equiv)
#3 - Full Optical + 2x digital (2400mm equiv)
#4 - Full Optical + 4x digital (4800mm equiv)
24mm Water Tower is the little red "dot" almost directly in center.
1200mm
2400mm
4800mm
4800mm - slightly diff view
Now a couple using the Built-In "TeleConverter" set at 2x
#1 is full Wide Angle with the 2x
#2 is full Telephoto with the 2x
24mm + 2x TC = 48mm
1200mm + 2x TC = 2400mm
Nice comparison...but I dont see#4

Nice visual comparison.
I previously did the same comparison with the SX40, so decided to do the identical subject for a true comparison.
Oh yeah, BOTH sets were done Hand-Held, with my back leaning against a house. (Got a nice new tripod but haven't used it yet!! LOL!!)
SX40 at wide angle
SX40 at full optical (840mm equiv)
SX40 at full digital (approx 3360mm equiv)

Must have checked them too quick, should see 5 pics in first SX50 set, then 2 showing use of the built in TeleConverter. Then 3 from the SX40
Thanks for posting these photos. I bought the sx50 and tried it out under several conditions, and used the preprogrammed settings since I wanted to see how it compared to my Kodak bridge as an all around. I found that it was spectacular for long zooms and landscapes, but on flowers, portraits, moderately low light inside the house, it flunked the test. Probably would have done better with custom settings, but for my shooting it wouldn"t work since I don't shoot much that needs that level zoom. You are a lot steadier with the camera than I am, had to set it on top of the neighbors mailbox to shoot a mailbox about two blocks away. I carried the camera back for a refund.

Thanks for posting these photos. I bought the sx5... (

I haven't found any issues with flowers, etc. It does take more care holding it indoors due to a little lower shutter speeds.
RAW file edited with DPP
Viola (I believe) a little less than 1/2 the size of the Pansy
Pansy -approx 1" to 1-1/4" across
Thanks, those are good shots. I think part of my trouble was that I could not hold it steady enough. At my age, I have to either run the speed up or use a tripod; age extracts its toll.

How do you get the 4x?
Set the Digital Zoom at "Standard".
Then when you zoom, the largest section is the "optical" range, the next little bit is the first 2x of "digitial" zoom, and the next colored section is the 3-4x part of the "digital" zoom.
The 'white' range is the first '50x' zoom, 'yellow' is from 50-100x, and 'light blue' is the 100-200x.

Oh right - it was my deteriorating math "skills" that threw me! Thanks much.

Your comparisons with the SX40 is what persuaded me to get one and I love it!! Your SX50 comparisons are a little better that the SX40 ones but for what I do the SX40 is perfect.

The improvements on the SX50 got me to upgrade. Much reduced shot-to-shot time, reduced shutter 'lag' time. Ability to use a remote release and save in RAW without adding any 'hack.' Control layout under the right thumb, etc.
I still have the SX40 but don't use it much now.
