Walking Women of Brown County, a group I belong to, maintains a couple of trails in this park. Since we were clearing the trails, I didn't have my camera with me, just the IPhone. We stopped to help a DNR gal encourage a snapping turtle to get out of the road.

No matter where the DNR gal stood, the turtle was going after her. He had snapped onto the car floor mat! He was determined! Thanks for the compliment!

Good that they knew to take precautions with those tough critters! Methinks he just probably just went back and crossed it after you all left, however :)

You know, Linda, I kinda had the same thought. A park road into a state forest, mid week, 2 DNR vehicles, 2 WW cars, probably the only traffic all day, maybe all week. The turtle was actually attacking the DNR gal. She thought she could just shoo him off to the side but he kept attacking her by snapping onto the car mat. I think she wasn't sure what to do...took us tough old ladies to show him who was boss..until he's alone again, creatures of nature.

The shovel looks like the safest way to go. Always take them in the direction they were going (head pointing) or they will just go back. Did you know they can do almost as much damage with their toenails as their mouth? My mother was rescuing one & had her hand cut up pretty badly by a kick from it's rear toenails. Hit a vein & poured blood. Ungrateful thing.

Wow! I knew you had to be careful, didn't think of toenails. They do have a longer neck than most turtles so they can turn around and snap you too. I knew about the direction thing. I was surprised since we were in a low volume & speed traffic area in a state forest mid week, that the DNR gal was even bothering to get him to the side of the road. I was told because they are picked up for dinner! I believed them, my Dad never saw a snapper that he didn't bring home or dinner!
