I'm inexperienced when it comes to using raw images. I can open them in the program that came with my SX 50 Canon, which is called 'Digital Photo Professional', and will (hopefully) learn what all the terminology means for editing them, but my question is actually, how can I open the raw CR2 images in Photoshop Elements 10? It says it doesn't recognize that type file, but when I inquire (Googling), about it, others say they can open raw in Elements 10. Confused. If you can explain (in baby steps), if there is a way to do so, I would very much appreciate it. What I have read about it seems to talk about the 'Editor' in Elements. I don't know about any such option. What am I missing?
Unfamiliar with Elements, but thinking you might need an update or plug-in.

Elements comes with the Adobe Camera Raw Converter. This plug-in lets you convert your Raw files. In the Full Editor, just go to File>Open, navigate to where the Raw file is stored on you computer, and select it. Your file will open in the Raw Converter.
The reason why you are getting a message that Elements 10 doesn't recognize your Raw file is a simple one. The latest Camera Raw for Elements 10 is the 6.7 update. Adobe introduced support for your camera (Canon SX 50) with Camera Raw 7.3 update. However, this update is not compatible with Elements 10.
Here are your options:
1. Upgrade to Elements 11; Camera Raw 7.3 update is compatible with this version.
2. Get PS CS6 or Lightroom 4; the 7.3 update is compatible with both.
3. Get Adobe DNG Converter. This is a free utility. It will convert the Raw files from the Canon SX 50 into the non-proprietary DNG format. After your Raw files have been converted to this format, they will open in the Raw Converter in Elements 10.

Before you invest in a purchase of PSE11, consider learning a bit about DPP. This program came free with your Canon and be used to perform most (nearly all?) edits of your raw files saving only the most complex changes for PSE10 after you convert from RAW to TIFF or JPEG.

I use DPP to convert to raw, then process in PSE 11. I also use Photomatix after the RAW conversion. Hope this helps.

Ziza, thank you so much for taking such pains and offering all that help. I downloaded the dng converter, and Praise the Lord, it worked! Now I can manipulate the photos in Elements 10. Thanks so much!

I used to dng the CR2, then I found a lazy man's way. After inserting my memory card I see CR2 and below JPG (I generally shoot in both). I then double click the CR2 and in a few seconds it opens in PSE 10 in Raw. After a bit of pp it can open as usual as a JPG.
