Anybody ever run across anything that actually works for gnats? Ive tried the Yard Guard and the Raid and even bought one of those propane foggers. It doesnt seem to have any impact on the gnats at all Im not at all sure they dont enjoy it. Theyre so thick they almost form a cloud anyway ANY suggestions would be appreciated.
Sugar water in an atomiser works. But you have to spray it on some-one else who's close by.
vanilla mixed in water works, but you need to reapply it every 10 minutes, but you smell nice

Thank you pear art I'll give the vinegar and detergent a try. It's hard to eliminate the standing water part of the equation as here in the mid west we're experiencing excessive rain and a lot of flooding. I live only about a block from a river which is over it's banks and of course there's standing water everywhere. I really don't mean to complain too loudly as there are folks with a lot more problems than gnats.
We have had 13 of the last 16 days with no sun so I hear ya.

I just sit by my Mother..........don't have one gnat come close to me then
You might try Skin So Soft. It comes in little packages like Handi Wipes or the bottle. Works great at keeping all bugs away, CIA excepted. :)

Scottish gnats / midges are the worst I've come across. Citronella oil works O.K. to a point (depends how hungry the bug in question is) or try AVON Skin so Soft. Don't think this repels them so much as puts an unpalatable layer between you and the bug. The spray is much easier to use than cream out of the bottle.
If they are food gnats, they will drown themselves in a small container of a mixture of vinegar, water, and a squirt of liquid dish soap...more vinegar than anything else.
Try Permethrin. As long as your skin isn't sensitive to it, it works better than DEET.
DEET is a repellent, while Permthrin iactually kills the little SOB's. It's easy to use and is every effective. I used it during a hunting trip to the jungles of the Yucatan and it was the only thing that worked. Hell, they've got bugs down there that haven't even been identified by science yet.
Try Downey fabric softener sheets. Just tuck one in your clothes. Also works like a miracle on removing dried on bugs from the hood of your car. Just wet the car rub the bugs off and rinse. I live in Florida and know Bugs!
