Is that one with or without VC (vibration control- image stabilization)? The lens is fairly soft between 200-300mm. Throughout the rest of the range it tends to be a little soft. The VC works great and the AF is a little slow.
It has all the weaknesses of such a broad zoom range. You give up some quality for convenience. You will have to make the call. I would not buy it unless I tried it out and compared it to other lens. Find a local store.
I bought it because it was suppose to be so great and I thought it would be a great walk around lens for my Canon 5D III. I tried everything but could never get a sharp image even on a tripod. There was a small sweet spot but that was it. I returned it within a week
I can't comment on this particular lens. However, having purchased the Tamron 18-250 with VR two months ago, I can honestly say I am totally pleased with quality, construction, and my images. It's a great walk around lens and you may want to pursue the idea of going this route.

I recently purchased the new Tamron 18-270mm F3.5-6.3. This lens has the Piezo Drive and VC (image stabilization). With a $50 factory rebate I ended up paying $370. This is a good walk around lens and has had a number of good reviews from fellow UHers. You can check these out in the archives. I initiated quite a discussion a few weeks ago. So far, I am pretty happy with this lens.
I recently purchased the Sigma 18-250 and have no regrets. I also have the Tamron 18-270. In my experience, the Sigma was able to focus MUCH faster than the Tamron in lower light conditions. BOth take great pix.
Hope this helps.
Pete

I purchased one about 15 years ago, and for quite a long time, it was my go-to lens. I'm still using it, and I have no major complaints. Lens creep is something that I deal with, but nothing is perfect! I understand the new versions are much better than the antique that I'm using, and probably lighter weight.
