Vault is a sculpture that has been at various places around Melbourne since it was first created in May 1978. It was controversial right from the start and is commonly known as the "Yellow Peril".
A few weeks ago, Peter (Conkerwood) challenged me to "get a good image of the Yellow Peril", so this is it.
Not a totally honest piece of work, as I shall explain. I looked up my Photographers Ephemeris (if you haven't got this app, you should get it), and it showed me that if I got up a hour or so before sunrise, I would be able to include the setting moon at the Yellow Peril's location. However, the moon yesterday morning was totally obscured by thick cloud. So, this moon is a totally photoshopped in version, from another shot I took of the moon last night when it was much clearer.
Just trying to make it like I imagined it was going to look - please forgive me :-)
The image is a five exposure merge (I shot seven, but only chose to use five, dropping the two most overexposed images).

Ah the yellow peril, I have never seen it looking so good. Seems graffiti-free at the moment which has got to be a first. Interesting perspective, as its quite a large piece so when you stand close, which most Melbournians have at some time or another, it sort of imposes itself, whether you like it or not. But here it is dwarfed by the other building. I don't know whether they have repainted it but you have given it quite a clean appearance which I quite like. I can see why you wanted the moon there as it provides the perfect balance by filling in that big hunk of negative space, just a pity that you were not lucky enough to get the real thing. But my challenge was to get a decent pic and you certainly have done that. You made the Yellow peril look good and that is an achievement.
BTW I found a couple of CATS today so will post shortly. (This was the return challenge from Andrew to me.)
Your work always makes me smile Andrew, keep them coming.
Peter

I didn't do anything to clean up the sculpture, it was looking immaculate, so obviously repainted and untouched by taggers in this location. It was looking as good as it ever has, and the location actually suits it better than any of the previous ones.
