Well Bob, sounds more like a market research question with just three tidbits of info: female, DSLR newbie, price range.

Did you ask your daughter what she wants in a camera? Is she looking for lightweight? Nifty gadgets like tethering and GPS? Dependability? Ease of use?

That depends on his daughter. I bought my son a D40 from eBay a few years ago, and when he dropped it one time too many, I got him a D3100 refurb. I didn't ask him anything. It just showed up at the door one day. My son is not technically inclined, although he does a great job making videos. Asking him questions would have been futile. He has no interest in learning about the camera or photography, but his artistic eye captures pictures that make me jealous.

Sometimes too many choices are just too many.

My suggestion, if this question is in earnest, is buy a digital camera buyer's guide. It will provide a side by side comparison of all makes and models, usually sorted by price category or targeted user market. Comprehensive list of features side by side without bias? Do it.

For $1500 you can get something above entry level, for sure. If you split it up and get her an entry level camera and photography classes with that $1500, it may be a better gift.

Since she is a newbie to DSLR, she might be better off with an entry level DSLR. When she feels she needs more camera, the older one will make a great backup camera.

I personally would recommend Sony. Their SLT line has a lot of good features and you will have about 30 years worth of great Minolta lenses to choose from. And they are reasonably priced. Also their entry level cameras are surprisingly compact; my a37 weighs about one pound and fits my small hands quite well.

Good luck on your hunt. Unless this gift is a surprise, you should take her to the camera shop to "fondle the fujis" so to speak. One of them will feel right to her.

Great advice. Buyers Guide all the way.

I bought a DSLR for my wife, because I had the budget for it, and she liked taking photos. I quickly found out that the camera was way more than she would ever need or want. Ended up taking the camera myself, and getting her a Panasonic Lumix point-and-shoot. She loves it.

If its possible, bring her up to Indy and visit Roberts camera shop...
They are awesome at helping and she could hold them all and find one that's right for her hands.

Nikon D7100 would seem to be in your price range. It is the newest of the Nikon DX cameras and has many desirable features.

And it would last many years....but maybe too many features?
Depends on her age and her interests. The D3200 is simpler for a younger child and doesn't weigh as much and would still have enough features to learn. And then can spend rest of the budget on a case and lenses and a spare battery.

Canon T4i, T5i, SL1, let her handle before buying, keep the extra money for accessories when she finds out what she needs, B&H has some good packages right now,
Bob.

I would avoid Nikon. There are too many posts of people having problems with them.

I would look at the new Canon T5i and the new smaller dslr by canon (forgot number)that just came out.

What do you have? And, even if it is a Nikon get the same piece of equipment that you have.

You are in So Indiana. There must be a good camera store left in Louisville if so go there and have her hold some cameras. Get the one that she likes best. It will be her camera.

As for kit lenses. That is a bunch of hooey. They are good and you, me or those who degrade them would never what kind of lens took a picture if they were not told which lens was used!

Does it have to be a surprise? Why not get her involved. Take her to the camera shop. Let her look at it, hold it, snap the shutter. Why take the chance of buying what you (and the hogs) like ... if it sits on the shelf in her room unused?

Great advice! She'll feel more 'a part of it' in selecting it herself.

Nikon owners are use to perfection .....

..... when a small insignificant flaw in a Nikon is mentioned somewhere you Canon owners plaster it all over the internet ..... shame, shame, shame, on you Canon owners ..... have you no moral decency .....
