I think my diffuser cloth is too dense - I got better results without flash than with.
These are of a metal, very small Chinese statue. I took several at many positions - this 4 direction rail sure helped in focusing -
I goofed up and was paying more attention to focus than lens setting & such - I'll take a clipboard out with me next time or my voice recorder.
DOF was very thin - I noticed after shooting if the subject was turned the slightest bit DOF was off on that side,

With flash - outside in shade

Same spot - no flash

Best not to use flash and place a diffuser between light source and close to subject. Use a tripod to allow you to close down aperture. Hope that helps.

Thanks for you advice. All my macro works are tripod and macro rail held as well as remote trigger- I just am too shaky to even think of hand held macros. Yes I have a lot to learn about the flash use - good thing digital film & processing is free (G) and i have lots of spare time to practice.

Harvey, if your using one of your lens reversed mount this is one of the draw backs. You working distance is much closer than a regular macro lens. In macro the closer you are to subject, the shallower the DoF. You have to be Flat/ same focal plane with subject as you have noted to get any depth and focus.
Try using paper towel as diffuser material, works Great.

Yes I am using a 24mm reversed - and will change my filter to the paper towel - also I am on the search for a 100mm macro as this reversed lens is OK but not what I want to do forever.
