Ball Head

Thought I would share that I just received the Acratech GP Ballhead that I ordered last week. Have tried two from Manfrotto, RRS's medium head and this is the FIRST one that STAYS where I put it when I take my hand away after tightening the knob.

I tested with my D3 and the 80-400, which is the heaviest lens I have, and, as I said, the the focus pointer did not move! I had skepticism that such a thing existed.

It is neat - they say it can function as a gimble. Having never owned a gimble can't say for sure but its motion seems as if it is much the same.

Also bought the Ultimate Level Base. Have been using one from Manfrotto and one from Nodal Ninja - each are triangular shaped with a screw adjustment at each corner. This one is paterned on a ball head and is so much easier to use; have just given it a quick test, not put to use yet, it does eeem as if it also will be a joy.

A link would be useful

Interesting idea, though a LOT smaller than an actual gimbal, I would not personally have one IO have three gimbals and I am testing a pre production one now

I have the Acratech ball head as well, and like you, am very pleased with it. I have only used its "gimble" feature once or twice. It worked ok, although I'm not convinced that it would be found adequate by those who have a need for a gimble on a regular basis. That not withstanding, it is a very well made and well functioning piece of equipment that most photographers would be extremely satisfied with.

I was a bit surprised that you found the RRS head lacking. You are the first person who I have heard voice dissatisfaction. It may be that you needed their full size head rather than the medium head. Their catalog says the medium head is intended for use with mid-range telephoto lenses, and "the occasional 500mm". Your 80-400 may have been right at its limits (especially if not mounted using a collar - I'm unfamiliar with Nikon equipment, so don't know if that lens has a mounting collar or not).

At any rate, enjoy your Acratech GP. it is a wonderful ball head that you should enjoy for years to come.

I have the Acratech ball head as well, and like yo... (show quote)

When I bought the RRS I told the guy on the phone what equipment I had that I wanted to use it for. Bought the head he recommended. I do use the collar on both the 80-400 and the 70-200.
