Good morning. My name is Don and I am a lensaholic-with a major B&H dependency. I've followed UHH for over a year but this is my first post. I have the opportunity to tour Auschwitz during an upcoming trip. I am doing this with great trepidation. I know it will be emotional but I just can't not go. I have a Mark II and am thinking that my 16-35mm lens will be the most versatile. Other option is 24-105. Has anyone been there and if so, what lens would you take? And any advice on what I need to be ready to experience?

I think the 16-35 is a good choice, but i would take a second lens a bit longer as well (maybe a 70-200).

Out of respect I would be very careful with what was photographed.

I haven't been there but I am in the middle of watching a documentary (10 part series) on Auschwitz. I'm pretty sure it will be a very emotional trip.

I do hope you share some of the pictures with the forum when you return.

I spent a day in Dachau and was deeply affected emotionally and experienced insomnia for a prolonged period. Your trepidation is well founded. Dachau had a few long views of the barracks, crematorium and small chapels. Otherwise a shorter range lens would be fine. Dachau had a gallery of B/W photos portraying daily life and horrors. I couldn't take photos feeling they were on record if I wanted access at a later date. The experience is far greater and deeper than any camera-lens combination can capture. You may be unable or unwilling to take the lens cap off. I respect your decision to bear witness to the legacy of Auschwitz.

I'd take the 16-35.

Never been there.

Photography regulations at Auschwitz-Birkenau:

12. Photography and filming on the Museum grounds is permitted exclusively for private, personal use. Under no circumstances may such photographs or films be used in any context or undertaking that infringes upon the good name of the Victims of Auschwitz Concentration Camp. Flash photography and the use of tripods are not permitted inside buildings. Photography and filming are not permitted in the room containing Victims' hair or in the cellars of block 11.

13. Photography and filming for commercial purposes requires the consent of the Museum director and a signed agreement.

Bring your fastest lens for inside images.

Your experience there will be far more important and emotional than photography. Folks get upset if you attempt candids of them there. Many are grieving. It is not the place to be snapping away, be discreet & respectful.

Do a Google Images search. It will give you an idea of what your eyes will see there.
Ready to experience? That propably depends on yourself.
For myself, I know that I would have to fight a lot of emotions from very severe anger to very deep sadness. A great-aunt died there.

For an in depth view/history of Auschwitz there is the BBC documentary Auschwitz: Inside the Nazi State.
http://www.pbs.org/auschwitz/
Netflix has it available.

This is the series I am currently watching, it is emotional to say the least, I thought it was a 10 part series but it is 6. I've had to break it up into smaller parts to watch it. :(

Check out: Downfall(Der Untergang).
I have avoided watching Nazi/Hilter programs for a long time. They are all over the history and other channels.
Than I watched this.

Thanks for your feedback. Discretion up to and including leaving the lens cap on will be the order of the day. I had a very hard time emotionally going thru the holocaust museum in Israel so to actually be where that hell on earth occurred is sobering to say the least. That's one of the reasons I only want to take one lens - no gadget bag. Be as unobtrusive as possible. Think the 2.8 16-35 will be the one I put on the camera. I'll let you know what I experienced when I get back.

I went to Auschwitz when I married my first husband who is polish 25 years ago and the intense memory of that visit is still with me now. The visit haunted me for weeks afterwards, but I always say to anyone who have an opportunity to go, please do so, you need to witness the atrocities of war and what mankind can do to its own. I could not bring myself to use my camera then, and I feel the same now, so just prepare yourself for possibly experiencing similar emotions. Sorry, not very helpful on what lens to use.

HI,

I was intending to go to Auschwitz but changed my mind .

I visited Terzingen internment camp and that was enough for me. How people could be so cruel is beyond me, maybe we all have a dark side that we repress.

Wish you well with the trip.
