Wanting to learn all I can

Hi, first time posting, but have been looking at the posts for a few days. I am going to grandchildren's play, and the lighting will be low. I have a Nikon D40x. How should I set up aperture and speed (or whatever else) for taking pics without flash? Currently they turn out fuzzy with my 18-55mm lense.

A couple of things you might try. You may need to stabilize the camera with a tripod or monopod, or any stable surface. Because of the necessary low shutter speeds, any movement is magnified.
If you have access to the venue, you might be able to practice various shots to determine the best settings. You realize that wider apertures result in lower depth of field and may give you focus problems, especially if your subjects are not on the same plane. If the caracters are moving, low shutter speeds can also be problematic. In that case you need the highest shutter speed possible. try to catch them when they pause. If you need to move the camera(pan) try to wait a few seconds to allow any shake in the camera to subside. Also try to catch them in the brightest light on the stage. You ma have to sacrifice some shots to make sure that you are steady. Better have a few good shots than to waste your time on blurry photos.
God luck and I hope his helps.
