Can you do it again and turn your head into the light a little so it'll light up your iris and make them stand out?

Mmmm good thought i did try it but i was hand held and didn't want to use tripod so my guess at where the camera should be pointing was way of to do this i looked down the lenses reflection in the mirror and positioned the camera so i could see the mirror reflecting back, but i agree with you and at some stage i will get the tripod out and give it another go.

I like the serious focus in your eyes in the first image. Trash the second one because it sucks. Cropped in a disturbing way). The first image would be better if the left side of your face was not underexposed. I realize sidelight was the effect you were looking for, but and a reflection or +1stop exposure compensation.

I think the cropping on the second shot is fine, but the focus needs a little work.

Another thought, you may want to wear a shirt that reflects the color of your eyes to make them 'pop' a little more. For some reason, the eyes are what makes or breaks a 'people' photo.

I like the first one alot. I like the split lighting and the low key which looks good on guys. The second one isn't in focus, looks like camera shake. Always focus on the eyes.

The shot is excellent tj!!
Captures the soul
The best portraiture shots in the world are serious shots where ones essence is exposed. Many people photograph better with serious shots -- me included.
This is the best self portrait I've seen!

I was in sidney and townville and dunk island on the great barrier reaf in 1985
Had some opportunity to dive there again but turned them down. It wasn't the great whites - it was irukandji.

Take care Mate

I actually LIKE the second one very much!
Mysterious, maybe a little disturbing but COMPELLING me to stick around and try to figure you out a bit *blush*
The shadowing in it is perfect...

But I do wish the first one wasn't as dark as it is... just a smidgen more light... teensy, weensy bit more. :)

Ok, i agree with you then. Its all a matter of personal taste really. You did nail the emotion through your eyes and thats what makes it a good image.
