Coolpix 510 or an inexpensive zoom lens?

I'm just beginning with digital, finally leaving my beloved film and need input about the long zoom on the Coolpix 510, which costs about the same as an inexpensive not-quite-so-long zoom.
Somehow, I like the idea of the 510, giving me a range from semi-wide to 1000mm. The 510's lesser cost is attractive, and as such seems ideal to take on trips (saves space, [;is less angst over potential damage or theft).
I'd appreciate hearing from some experienced hogs about the overall quality of the 510 lens... coverage, resolution, sharpness, color rendition, bokeh, etc. compared to the long zoom mentioned above. I would like your subjective comments, from non-users and from people who use a 510.

I was impressed by reviews, etc. when I was looking for a similar camera. After a hands on with various cameras, I chose the Canon SX40 (and now the SX50) because of the external HotShoe, fully articulating LCD screen, and with the SX50 the addition of RAW and a remote release.
I have never regretted my decision.
If you use the "search" option on UHH and put in "P510" or "SX40" or "SX50" you should find many examples and 'conversations' regarding these cameras from the various users.

Welcome to the site.I have had the Nikon P500, P510 and P7000 and now the P7100. I keep moving up the line.:):) The two boys have the P510 and the P7000. And I keep the 7100 in the truck. I keep looking for a small camera to take in a pocket. But my next one will be the Canon SX 50. Very nice camera. Not as small as the Nikons, but from what I have seen on the site it takes a great picture even at the long end.:):)

When I was playing with my 510, before the son stole it.:) I had to use a monopod at the long end to get good shots. It gave good color and very nice shots. Is it as good as my D300s? No. But it did a nice job for what it is. I will go look for a few shots in the hard drive.:):)

Erv how do you rate the P7100 vs the SX50? Guess the SX50 wins?

My thought is that the SX50 wins. It wins because of price. Being a bridge, there are no lens compatibility issues. I recently purchased a Nikon P510 because of brand loyalty, and it was a mistake. The SX series from Canon is clearly superior because of its advanced features.

I am inclined to buy the Canon, all my cameras are Canon, and was thinking the Zoom is better @ Canon, so why choose Nikon to try something different?

From what I see posted here, the SX 50 wins by a long margin. It will be in my truck before Christmas.:):)
