If you're a sams club member you can buy Elements 11 until May 28 at this price. Add 10% if you're not.

I'm new at this- is PS Elements the same as plain ol' PhotoShop? Or is it an add-on or something? Thanks. Please forgive the stupid question...

Photoshop Elements (PSE) is a program on its own (now in version 11). However, it does include many of the tools, commands, and features found in Photoshop (PS). Some of them are the same; some are a "diluted" version of their counterpart in Photoshop. Ex.: The Refine Edge feature in Photoshop Elements 11 is an upgraded one which was "copied" from Photoshop. The Raw Converter in Photoshop Elements 11 is the same version (version 7.x) as in Photoshop CS6. However, the one in Photoshop Elements 11 doesn't have as many features as the one in Photoshop. Furthermore, Photoshop Elements has features which are specific to this program such as Guided Edit.

Photoshop Elements is also referred to as Elements.

Here is an interesting article comparing Photoshop Elements 11 and Photoshop CS6.

So if I'm interested in editing my photo's and don't have a program yet, would you recommend my buying the Elements at Sam's? I'm fairly computer literate.
Thanks

I would recommend you try PSE 11 first. You can download a free 30-day trial from Adobe. You can play around with this program to see if it meets your needs and interests.

Here is some help how to use PSE 11.

Adobe usually releases a new version of Photoshop Elements every year (sometime in September or October). The price for the current version will begin to go down as the date for the release of the new version gets closer.

I like to think of PSE as being made up of "elements" from the full PS program.

If you see Lightroom on sale, you might consider that. LR is like a digital darkroom - used to make improvements to an image. PS can do major manipulation.

I've been learning/using Elements for about 5 years. Its a great way to start for a lot less money and someday if its not enough you can spend the money for Photoshop. You don't really need to keep buying and updating every new Element that comes out either.

I also like the fact that the software I'm reviewing works with the workflow of Lightroom.

I have another thread which I'm comparing my need of Elements to OnOne Photo Suite as it is also on sale for $99.00 and may give me similar features of Elements plus more. It also works with the Lightroom work flow.
