Constellation

"Constellation" is a sculpture by Bruce Armstrong and Geoffrey Bartlett, it sits beside the Yarra River, between the King and Queen Street bridges in Melbourne, Australia. It is constructed of stainless-steel, copper and cyprus pine.

During the 19th century, the Yarra River near this spot was the focus of Melbourne's shipping activity. Natural falls in the river created a barrier between the salt and fresh water, and just below these falls a natural widening in the river enabled boats to turn around after unloading at Customs House. The five carved-wood figureheads comprise a dragon, woman, bird, man and lion. These reflect the ethnic and cultural diversity of those who used the turning basin during the early years of settlement.

Interesting history, fine shot, but those are the most but ugly 'sculptures' I've seen in a long time.

Andrew for me this is probably the best pic you have posted so far. No nits whatsoever about the light, the processing or anything. I know sometimes I pick a little at the loss of detail through noise reduction but this time you have got the balance just right. Realy nice detail control even down to the drips of seagull sh*t on the top of the sculpture and the texture in the wood is just right. There is an interesting dynamic tension in the pic as all of the sculptures are leaning out to the left but the placement of the white vertical sort of holds them in place and creates a wonderful, if strained, balance. Its a beauty, well done. As an aside, is the yellow peril still parked on the opposite bank near the aquarium and if so the challenge is to compose a halfway decent pic with it as the subject. Good luck with that.

Peter, thanks for that. It's interesting isn't it, when I took the shot I really didn't expect to use it, thinking it wouldn't come to much. But once I processed it I really liked it.

The Yellow Peril has been moved a bit further out of sight, it's now down in Sturt St. But challenge is accepted anyway. May not get down there this weekend, but someday soon.

Andrew well done on the your photo Technics.

What I'm going to comment on has only to do with some of the subject matter which appears in the photo. That is the litter under the benches, the power lines (if that is what they are), and the mast of the boat. They draw some attention away from the main subject of the photo.

Very well done Andrew, like the small items that you left in the shot. None of them large enough to distrack, so often a shot is so CLEANED up that one looses all perspective of the original. The mast looks good, it helps to tell the story of the shot, it's a marine atsmosphere, looks good there.
Great on the tint and strength of the tint, not overblown in the least.
Look forward to more.
