Is there a counter on the Nikon 7000 or 7100 to show how many shots have been taken? I've seen some comments that indicate that the user knows how many times the shutter has cycled but I can't find that on the camera menu or in the book.

Many cameras record the shutter count in the EXIF info of a shot.

It's very easy with a Nikon. Take your pick.

Get Irfanview (free) and also get the plug-ins for it. Start the program, open a photo, click on Image > Information > Exif info.
Get ExifInfo - also free. Unzip and get the icon onto the Desktop. Find a photo and drag it onto the icon. A window will open with loads of info. Look down the list for Shutter Count (or whatever they call it).

Good advice with the other posts to your question. Remember, however, that any time you do a firmware upgrade to your Nikon camera, it usually resets the shots fired to zero.

Nope. Even having the camera refurbished by Nikon doesn't reset the count. From all I've been able to find, the count is never reset, and it might not be possible without major work. Firmware updates have never changed my shutter count.

I stand corrected. Thank you Jerry. I misread the statement from Nikon. The Nikon statement stated that "a firmware upgrade can affect the shutter count". I guess that is not the same as resetting.

Well, that is really strange. They should have explained that statement.
