Nikon Lens Question

I recently bought a Nikon D800E. I have been considering selling my Nikon 17-55mm f/2.8 DX lens and buying a Nikon 24-75 f/2.8 FX lens.

Here is the dilemma, the 17-55 DX is equivalent to a 25-82mm FX lens and the 17-55 is considered a professional quality lens.

Question , is there any reason to sell the 17-55 and buy the 24-75? What do I gain?

Thanks

You gain the ability to cover the entire picture area of your D800e sensor. Your 17-55 DX lens covers only the smaller area of your crop frame camera.

I understand that but am I getting a 50% reduction in file size and that is why I should get the 24-75mm FX lens?

To get the most from your D800 you want to use only the best Nikon lenses and those would be the Nikon 24-70 and/or the 70-200. ;)

I'd be happy to offer an answer to your question, but I don't understand it. You're getting a 50% reduction in file size from what, or by doing what? Are you asking about using your D800e in the crop mode with your DX lens as opposed to using the 24-75 with your D800e in the full frame mode?

I think you should sell your D800E and buy a D7100, then you can keep your old lens and be happy with it - no need for full frame lens on that camera.

The OP bought a full frame camera for a reason. Why dis that?

I am not so sure he bought it for a reason, it seems more likely he bought it by mistake. I am just pointing out a new option for him, the D7100 is the best Nikon DX camera available today and since it seems important to keep the old DX lens, it would be a better match with a D7100 than a D800E. He also wants to reduce his file size, and that he will get with the D7100.

Yes, sell the 17-55 and get a 24-70. (unless you have a DX camera you still use)
The 17-55 on a DX camera has the same angle of view as a 25-82 on your 800. There is no point in using the 17-55 lens on a full-frame camera. It's a great DX lens on a DX camera.

When you go from a DX lens to a FF lens you get a wider angle of view...and like GN said...if your going to use a DX body for maybe a back up down the road...hang on to it.

I moved from a D300 to the D800 had the same lens17-55 which I loved but you have to bite the bullet and go for the 24-70, , then you use the full frame camera to its best I part exchanged camera and lens and got a reasonable deal.
No comparison on results they are way better
