Whats the main difference between a 55-200mm f/4.6g IF ED and 18-105mm135-56G ED lense. The latter came with the Nikon. (Just the facts)
I took a pic w. the 200mm and it looks better the standard.
Still new to this and you help has been great!

While they are both zoom lenses, the first will zoom between 55mm and 200mm. The latter zooms from 18mm to 105mm. So, the MAIN difference is that the latter will take a more wide-angled photo, while the first will allow you to zoom further to 200mm. If you take a shot with both lens set to 55mm, the resulting photos should be nearly identical.
The 55-200 is going to allow you to zoom closer to the subject than the 18-105.
In what way did your photo "look better" when taken with the 200mm?
The dog hairs are more defined than the 18-105mm.
Is the 200 more versitile or the one I should keep on the camera?
Ron
Well, I own both of these lenses, and while I happen to use the 55-200 more often, that doesn't mean I think it's a BETTER lens. When I want to do landscapes, I'd much rather be using the 18-105 just to get the wider field of view.
As I alluded earlier, at the same focal length (i.e 100mm), the results of both lenses should be very, very similar, all other things being equal. I suppose it's possible that the 18-105 may have some sort of problem, but you could test it using several focal lengths. Take photos using both lenses at the same settings and compare. But, the answer to your original question is that they are simply different focal length zooms. Both should take good photos.

As Brucewells said that the results should almost be the same. If your 200 mm looks better may be because you are shooting 'closer' to your subject.
Unlike Brucewells I like to do head shots of people and I like to stand back. I have a narrow vision so the longer lens is the one I would use most of the time. But sometimes I need a wider view and use a shorter focal lens.
Both lenses will take good pictures. You will have to decide which one should be on your camera. - Dave
