Not a gator? Then, what is it?

This is not a good shot but it's the only one I have of this creature! I saw a brownish shadow moving out in the middle of the lake at John Chestnut Park. From time to time a head would emerge. I could not tell what iit was and just pointed and shot as it emerged. Upon getting home, I found this. It was definitely the color as shown here, it appeared to be smooth skinned - not rough like a gator - and the head is like a gator's but the snout is different. Is this some kind of gator, an anomoly? I do hope someone knows!

strange fella!

Oh, this is an easy one. It is just a Colombian submarine made to look like a gator bringing drugs into the country.

We see them all the time here, in Kansas City.

thanks to all! Enjoyed the creative responses but I am tempted to go with Nessie! However, the soft shelled turtle seems like a good answer. If so, it was the maximum in size. the shadow appeared to be at least three feet long and the head was rather large too. we considered the caiman but there is no rough texture to it.

That is a Florida Softshell Turtle. They can reach up to around 30" in length and up to around 45 pounds in weight. Females are MUCH larger than the males so if the one you saw had a shadow of around 36" I would assume that the one you saw was a wise old female.

Thank you!! love the pictures of the turtle as they confirm identity! I am guessing it is as was suggested, a wise female, as it was quite large! UHH is so great for so many reasons ... Among them, getting great information from knowledgable people! Thanks again!

I agree with Cardinal. It looks like a softshell turtle.
