Hi all!
I would like to upgrade my 18-55 kit lense to something sharper. I now have a much better eye and field skills and want to upgrade. Mostly landscapes. I like the Sigma brands and am considering the 17 -- 70. Top focal length is not an issue but would like something wide. Crop factor is 1.6 (Nikon) d5100 is camera.

Open to any brand and any and all suggestions and opinions! Just looking for as sharp as I can afford. Thank you all.... Arthur

I went through the same situation and after months of research, and suggestions from the UHH forum I purchased the Nikon 16-85mm. It is without a doubt the best all around and most used lens that I have. Extremely sharp!
here are several shots from that lens mounted on my
D7000. It is, according to several UHH members, including Mt shooter the best DX lens Nikon makes.

The 17-55 DX is the sharpest DX-only lens in the stable.
It was made when Nikon didn't have a full-frame sensor camera. 2.8 constant aperture.
(FF equivalent- 25.5 to 82.5)
The baby twin brother of the full-frame 24-70.
I have the 16-85 and though it has a more versatile focal length range and VR, I don't use it as often as the 17-55.

Nikon DX crop factor is 1.5.

Thank you gentle people! I will assume the 16 -- 85 will be fully functional with the D5100? I like the 17 to 55 but dropped it and now it is functionally challenged!

I might go with this one.

I have recently replaced my Nikon 18-55mm kit lens with a Sigma 17-50mm f2.8 (constant). Great lens. Well made, tack sharp, OS, & fast. In all fairness, the Nikon 18-55mm is an under rated lens. It's pretty sharp-just plasticky looking & slow.

Agreed! I've enjoyed it until I dropped it!

I have used the sigma 17-55 2.8 for a number of years and have been very happy with it.

In what way is your kit lens not sharp?

Nikon 16-85mm. I treasure that lens. It is also one of the sharpest I've tested for resolution, etc. Difficult, if not impossible to pickup as a Refurbish, but worth the try. Had to buy mine new.

Thanks Al. Does it autofocus and use TTL information?

Nate, it's the lense i was looking at. I thought the kit lense did a very good job. It is certainly cheap and i like the focal length for what i shoot.

It's nice having choices!!! Thanks for taking time to respond.

Yes 100% compatible. Note Sigma is actually 18-50 2.8

I have and use the Sigma 17-70 - it is a great lens - for the price point. There ARE better lenses out there - for double the cost or MORE !
