Took these photo several years ago. Hired a pro to go with me, and he gave me a red filter to use. I'm not sure I like the unnatural way it makes the canyon look. What you do think about au-natural vs. filter? Also, there is something that I can't put my finger on that is either missing or I have done wrong in my composition.....any thoughts?

I like your natural light photo, including composition, color, DOF, etc. I suggest no editing changes.

Your other two are hard to look at, because the color is so far off. Red filters are designed for B&W photography, not color.

Using a decent PP program, try subtracting red from these photos.

This has been on "my list" for some time now. I was talking about this spot to two photo buddies today. I really don't think this place needs any color manipulation. Incredible and sensual shapes. Thanks for sharing!

I have to add that I am extremely jealous of any photographer who has experienced Lower Antelope Valley.

I wanna go!

You definately should go, but make sure that you go to Lower Antelope Canyon, not Upper. It is strange, but headed East out of Page, Lower Antelope is on the upper side of the road, and vice versa. Upper Antelope you are put into a truck with lots of other people, and hearded through the canyon. Upper Antelope is wider than Lower, but I liked the feeling of almost being one with the rocks. Lower Antelope allows you to go in by yourself, and take as much time through the canyon as you want, or you can have one of the Denai guides escort you. Either way, it is an experience that is not soon forgotten, and I would go back in a heartbeat. Also, about 3 miles south of Page is the horseshoe bend of the Colorado River that is so photographed. I didn't get a real good shot of that, because I can't get real close to drop offs, and there are no barriers at the edge of the cliff, but I got a decent shot anyway. I tried crawling up to the edge, but wearing shorts, and trying to crawl on sandstone did not work well at all. The person belonging to the feet that suddenly appeared at my side asking if I needed help, took an OK shot at the edge for me.

I was there last year. Unfortunately the threat of rain prevented us from visiting the caves - they were closed for safety reasons. Got many other great shots though.

I like the natural version best and think that your photograph is excellent!

# 1 is a absolutely fabulous rendition.
Remember a pro shows himself up when suggesting a red filter, they are strictly for monochrome and work to increase contrast mainly in cloud type situations.

But the first shot shows that YOU are the Master, not he!

I prefer the first shot. The others are nice, but I like it to look a bit more "real".

The third photo looks like a face in the rocks. Cool!

I actually like that there are multiple shades from violet, chocolate, orange in the natural stone, depending on the light and shadows. I took some without filter. What do you think?
Awesome sculptured swirls in your first one, though. Even under ground, one needs to go first thing in the morning or late afternoon; NOT mid-day. Hope you don't mind that I posted this; it's just to illustrate what I mean about the multiple shades. 8-)

from Pathfinder:
"almost like HDR".
I don't know HDR, I mean I know what it is but have not used it. It was just from the camera without filter, but with a little bump in saturation.

I also like to shoot without filters. I am more of a "purist" I guess, want to show what is really there, or somehow bring out the natural beauty. I have seen shots where people have used filters, and they don't look real. I love the photo of the canyon showing the natural beauty....it's a real keeper. What do you guys think about using a tripod? I know for low light, or timed exposures it is a must, but I shoot mainly hand held. Took a photo "workshop" this year and the "instructor" disliked the fact that I did not have a tripod and camera level so much, that she spent all her time with the other students who did, and I was left to my own devices.
