Did you use a good sturdy tripod.

If it's not windy (very important), AND you use a tripod, try APERTURE Priority mode and set lens at f22, focus so BOTH Moon and Tree Branches are IN FOCUS (use preview mode to verify both are in focus)and let the Camera figure the SHUTTER SPEED. If the shutter is open too long and there is too much movement in the MOON or TREE BRANCHES, Open UP the Aperture to allow the Camera to SHORTEN the SHUTTER SPEED.

It's important that you don't touch the shutter but use the delay feature (or remote shutter control) so there is no shake put into the camera / tripod.

IMHO

the only reason the branches are in the shot, is I was too lazy to go out in the country..LOL

You may want to try a 2x converter.

I just thought the branches add something and would look pretty good if also in focus.

Well, it looks like Sunday night has a FULL MOON, so you'll have your chance to try some more shots in a few hours.

As a point of reference, the moon moves across the sky with an apparent distance equal to it's diameter about every 4 minutes. So, if you have a high zoom, you should not have a shutter speed longer than 10 seconds, or you will get a "speeding" moon image.

Since it's the bright object in the sky, be careful not to over-expose.

Try a higher ISO (before noise sets in).

We wish you luck. If the clouds stay away here in Southern California, I might try one tonight and post it tomorrow.

Follow up:

Well, I tried to take some pics of the moon last night. Man, was I way off the mark ??!!

I found, at least with my camera, that the Moon becomes a huge white blob (as in first pic) when allowing the camera to compute exposure. I only have a 300 mm zoom so the size of moon is not extreme, but I had to reduce the shutter time in MANUAL mode to get any detail on moon at all. Of course, this made all foreground black. (second pic)

I wonder if B&W HDR might work to cut some blooming of moon and bring out the trees/wires in front?

Oh, well. Guess I just gotta keep shooting since it's so much fun to learn.
