Lean times? No, not at all. SouthSide was a steel mill town up until the 70's.
There were always alot of bars, I'm guessing 30 maybe 40 from the 10000 block up to the 3600 block. Their main customers were older men, steel workers. In the 80's , after the decline of the steel industry, the younger crowd, students, artists, etc. moved in and the bars changed to service the younger crowd. These photos were taken on a early Saturday morning after the bar crowd had been up all night. I had gotten up early to catch an early sunrise. It was an overcast morning and the sunrise wasn't that spectacular so I thought I'd spend the morning doing some street shooting. I only caught a small section of the neighborhood.
I appreciate the military memorial.
The South Side of Pittsburgh in this photo is on the right side of the river bank in the foggy background.
