I notice Nikon has updated D600 firmware from C:100 to C:101. Has anyone done this update and is it helpful or not?

Not having the 600 yet, I can't tell you what is included in that update. You can go to the Nikon site and see exactly what is included in that update. I found the following information.

"Support for the AF-S NIKKOR 800mm f/5.6E FL ED VR has been added.
Subject tracking performance in AF-C (continuous-servo autofocus) autofocus mode with framing using the viewfinder has been improved.
Frame output size has been changed from 95% to 100% when movie live view display is changed to "Information off" and an HDMI-compatible device is connected.
An issue that caused the right edges of images to be somewhat white when captured at an Image area setting of DX (24x16) 1.5x withActive D-Lighting set to Off has been resolved.
When the camera's shutter-release button was pressed repeatedly for uninterrupted shooting with the "Record to:" option in Camera Control Pro 2's Storage tab set to "PC+CARD", the camera would stop responding with displaying "Err" in its control panel. This issue has been resolved.
In some very rare cases, colors would change with shooting when white balance was set to a specific color temperature, as with Preset manual or Choose color temp. This issue has been resolved."

I was about to load the firmware last night until I read the instructions. it all sounded a bit complex and I am easily intimidated. should it make me nervous or should I just go for it? it seems that newer updates, as they come along, might require the previous updates so I guess I'll just take a Valium and go for it. What's a coward to do Jerry?

The directions can sound intimidating, but it's actually very straight forward. You've evidently found this site - http://support.nikonusa.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/18267

...so just follow along. The main thing is to copy the update file directly onto the SD card without going to a folder. When you go to the Menu, follow the directions on the site, and it takes just a few seconds.

If you're really concerned, take it to a camera store -an actual camera store, not Best Buy - and they can do it for you.

It took me a while to figure out how to do this on my new Mac/Mountain Lion:

Click on "I Agree: Begin Download." You'll see evidence of a transfer in the top, right-hand side of your desktop next to READER.

Once the blue line does its thing, click on the gray "Macintosh HD" icon on your desktop. Scroll down to Downloads. In Downloads, you'll find the F-D600-V101M.dmg file. Drag it to your desktop.

Then, turn on your D600 and, while the card is still in the slot, REFORMAT your disk by pressing both of the red format buttons simultaneously. Make sure your battery has plenty of juice (I charged mine completely). Then, take the SD card from the camera and pop it into your card reader.

Drag the F-D600-V101M.dmg icon over to and on top of your D600 file (or whatever you named it) that just popped up when you inserted the card. Once it turns dark, open it up. You'll see that the upgrade is at the top line. Leave it there. THEN: DOUBLE-CLICK on that top line. You'll see the magic happening -- the blue "barber pole" will swirl. Another .bin line will appear.

Then drag your D600 icon to the trash can, take out your SD card and reinsert it back into your camera. Open MENU, go to the wrench (SETUP MENU), and then scroll to Firmware Version. Toggle right. Click on UPDATE. Don't turn off your camera until it's finished.

When it's finished, turn your camera off and back on. Check that your firmware shows the latest version. If it doesn't work, ask Jerryc41. (He's smarter than I am!)
