Salamanca Street Performers

This is a photo taken in Salamanca Market, Hobart last Saturday. The banjo player was pretty manic, so multiple exposures were out of the question, so I decided to create a -2 and +2 exposure in ACR from the RAW and then merge these with the original exposure in Photomatix. Processed in Topaz Adjust to give me the "old" style I was after. Pleased with the result.

Salamanca Place is one of my all time favourite places to wander around. Despite the modernisation and the cars you still have the feeling of stepping back in time. I like this pic a lot. (So does my wife, I just showed it to her and she thinks it is gorgeous.) Certainly, as you know, I am not normally a fan of Pseudo HDR but this has worked exceptionally well. And I could get picky about some of the slightly blown highlights but that's minor stuff which would really miss the point. What you have got is a wonderful tonal range that perfectly suits the area. I particularly like the way that both guys seem to be looking at the same place which seems to direct our eyes to the seated guy's left hand. The fact that they are looking at the same place also emphasises that they are together in the music. And then there are two empty seats behind them which suggests other musicians taking a break while these guys have their turn. I love a pic with a story. I got so intrigued by the pic that I checked them out and found some of their videos on utube. They are fantastic, I am a dedicated blues fan and these guys do it well so I will probably end up buying their cd. (Just proves that UHH can cost you money) What settings did you use on Topaz to get this result? Its very effective and I would like to experiment with it a bit. BTW just to prove that at times I can be a real a smart aleck, its not a banjo its a resonator steel guitar which he seems to be playing bottleneck style, hence the tube on his finger. A fantastic pic Andrew, I hope you have a good few more for us from the Apple Isle.

Thanks Peter, it's interesting isn't it that i feel more chuffed by the fact that your wife likes the shot! Sorry, if I cause you the expense of the CD, but I'm sure you'll get lots of pleasure out of it. Did the guitar playing dude go all manic in the videos you watched, he was fantastic to watch.

Now, I know I should always remember the settings I use for each shot, but I never record them. I think in Photomatix I used Natural with a few tweaks (I always just move the sliders around a little, but pretty close to Natural), then in Topaz Adjust it was the pre-set "Brown" with some small tweaks too. I like the "Brown" setting, I use it a lot.
