Anybody with an opinion on the Sigma 50-500mm, f4.5-6.3.?
I have one and you'll get no complaints from me.
It is heavy, you should use a tripod, but it can be hand held.
Here is Ken Rockwell's review on the lens.

Are you really asking about the 50-500 lens, which has been discontinued, or the 150-500 lens??
I ASS-U-ME :| He just missed a key stroke.

Yes, I "Ass-U-Me'd" too, but just thought I'd check. Some places you can still buy the 50-500 lens.
So...if you just missed a key-stroke, everything traveler has said is right on; I own one also and love it. Good crisp shots at all focal lengths and auto focus and OS work great. If you are shooting fast moving sports, I have found the auto focus just a bit slow, but that would be my only negative comment.
The only thing I noticed from a couple other threads on here discussing this lens is that a few people alluded to the fact that they got "bad" copies of it, had to return it to the dealer and get another copy.
At around $1100.00 its a great buy, I think.

Have the Sigma 150-500 after the first two field trips it was love. Use it very often with widlife.

No unfortunately it was not a key stroke error, I did not know it had been discontinued.
Anybody know why it was discontinued?

Penny,
Sorry, I don't know why it was discontinued, but go to Sigma's web site and check it out; the last time I checked their lens line up on their web site, it said the 50-150 was discontinued.
I can tell you that reviews of both lens' report that the 150-500 is much better. If you need the lower focal lengths, look at Sigma's 18-250 lens; it's a great all around lens and produces some great, crisp photos.
Check on-line, you may still find their 50-150 available somewhere.

Penny,
I may be wrong; I just clicked on the ad below this post that said, "Buy Sigma 50-500mm Lens" and it took me to the Sigma Website where it appears that they may have a new version of it for sale at $2450.00. Wow, pretty hefty price. If that's correct, I now have to wonder if my 18-250mm lens and my 150-500mm lens covers that range better than one lens covering the whole range?? Price for these two lens is still much less than $2450.

Yep, I was wrong; Sigma DOES have a new version of that lens; 50-500 4.5-6.3 DG OS HSM; $2450.00.

Hi, I have both the old Bigma and the New Bigma, the difference is the New one is a tad lighter its also longer and takes a 95mm Filter.
I dont use AF or a tripod and have never had any trouble with the pictures, have a look at some of my images as they were taken with the older of the two lens. One thing I will mention, get a battery grip it gives added balance to the extra length of the lens.
I got the 50-500 F4.5-6.3 APO DG OS from
http://www.srsmicrosystems.co.uk/they usually have deals on I bought this lens for £800, when all the other shops were asking £1300.
One other problem I have found is that the old 50-500 lens I could use the Kenko 1.5x and or the 2x teleconverter and they worked well together, Not so the New lens only works with the Sigma teleconverter ( I use a Pentax K10D, Gripped)
Hope this helps
Regards
John
John,
Just curious, but if you don't use AF or a tripod, why do you own both lens'? Is there image quality or a difference in the glass that makes the new one so much better??
I own the 150-500 and think it's awesome, along with the 18-250 lens, so I'm well covered from 18-500.

The reason, I fell backwards on some slippery ground, and tried to save the camera and lens. the Lens took a knock, and its in a repair shop waiting for the insurance company to make its mind up. the Old one was bought in 2005. really cant fault the lens
Hope this helps
