The D5100 has a shutter delay. It flips up the mirror and a half sec later (now the vibrations are damped) the shutter opens. Using it with VR helps too,

It does not however, have a mirror lock up for shooting feature.

True, but I like the shutter delay even better. It's like a very convenient mirror lock up.
You can engage mirror lock up by setting your camera to "live view" the depress the shutter button once. The mirror will now stay in the lock up position till you take it out of live view. You just won't be able to see the image in your view finder.

That'll work but you must rely on contrast detection AF. With the shutter delay it's using phase detection AF.

You shouldn't be useing autofocus in macro anyway.

Mmmmm, fair point. I think in terms of landscape photography, I guess, where I use the shutter delay feature.

Just a viewpoint... electronic flash can give you freedom from shutter speed issues, lots of light for higher f stops and greater depth of field. If you are not doing focus stacking, you can even handhold and perhaps chase live subjects. On an old sony (f717) I built an aluminum "light pipe" that directed the pop up flash down in front of the lens and got nicely exposed photos at great magnification (the "lens" was a canon 50 f1.4 jammed backwards in front of the zoom)
