Compact with Wide Angle Lens

Does anyone know of a compact camera that has a wide angle of view - wider than 28mm in 35mm terms? With so many different sensor sizes, it's hard to tell what 15mm really means. I generally have the 28-300mm on my D600, and I was wondering if there is a smaller camera that has a wider angle lens.

I have 28mm covered with my 28-300. I'm looking for something wider, but the widest I've seen is 24mm on a Samsung. I'd prefer to see the superzooms move toward the wider end, which would be more useful.

Haven't actually seen any that go wider than 24mm. The larger P&S and bridge cameras can add accessory lens to go wider.

Yeah, it looks like that's just about the limit. So I saved myself some money.

Not cheap at all but you could go m4/3 with something like the Zuiko 9-18 (efl 18-36). And the used bodies on ebay aren't all that expensive.

Thanks. I saw that one. Bs the time I bought the body and lens, the cost would be more than I'd want to pay. I'd be better off carrying two DSLRs.

jerry - take a look at Panasonic Lumix LX7 - lens is f1.4-2.3 and focal range 24-90 - http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/panasonic-lumix-dmc-lx7/ - gets a dpreview Silver Award.

I second the Panasonic Lumix LX series. Had the LX3, now the LX5 and love both. Very high quality image, but you may want to look for a good used one as the new prices are at the higher end for compacts. Less expensive but still really good are the Panasonic Lumix (with leica lens) DMC-ZS## series.... still has the 24 wide capability.

As you are finding out, Jerry, the WA end of the spectrum is definitely NOT the "strong suit" of the crop sensor cameras, from DX and APC-s on down. Coming up with a 5 or 6mm lens that doesn't bump against the surface of the sensor is more than difficult. A 24mm equivalent lens is only marginally wider than a 28mm, so it may, or may not, please you. Best try it before buying...

Actually, the 24mm length on the Sony NEX in vertical sweep panoram mode does really WELL ! But you cannot do sweep panos AND HDR at the same time - Would be nice if you could.... So HDR's done done with W-I-D-E angles only. Actually, I also Have a Tamron SP 20-40 F2.8-3.5 that I use for the panos.
