I was out at the local lake a couple weeks ago, the ice was still on. I saw these four birds flying and eating. What are they ? thank you early.

They are great blue herons. They are somewhat territorial, and will frequent a favorite feeding spot. The one with the long plums on his neck is a male. When they display the plums they are beautiful. When feeding they will stand motionless looking in the water for a fish or frog for a long period of time. Their body looks like a bush to water critters when they stand motionless They feed in both fresh & salt water marshes. They build huge nests and on the California coast there are several nature preserves where you can hike to a vantage point and with a moderate tele lens take photos of them inside the nest. Beautiful birds!

Thank you all for your help in the I.D. of these birds. I was out on a pier for about four hours to get these photos. Ya know, when you are having fun, cold or anything else will not distract you.

A woman my wife works with said she doesn't like to drive on the freeway that goes past the lake because there are a lot of 'herrings' that fly over.

It is a Teredactyl! A girl friend of mine saw a blue heron and she said "look a Teredactyl". So every time I see one of them heron I think of Kelly. So I just had to say it was a Teredactyl!
