A friend of mine gets consistently good photos of birds with same camera. Do you use it often? Is it hard to get used to how lightweight it is?

The P510 is my "keep it in the car camera" easy to find at any camera store, amazon, target, walmart might even have them. 42X optical zoom seems to do OK.
The Canon 100-400 with a 1.4 extender does not reach this far.
Canon now has a 50X optical zoom, that might be an option.
For half the price of a good lens you have a great "do it all, almost" camera.

It weighs about the same as a can of seltzer water, or Pepsi.

I owned a house in Hampton Bays. The Ospreys were thick as flies!

These birds nest on Sunrise Highway, Heckscher Park and Bayard Cutting Arboretum. I saw 12 birds today at the arboretum.

My problem with the Canon SX50 so far is getting used to holding it at the longer zoom. Had gotten used to the 35x on the SX40 and got good pics, but am still working on getting good hand-held pics with the SX50 at anything beyond about 1/2 zoom. On tripod or monopod it works great!

Oh yeah, almost forgot to say AWESOME photos!!

Thanks for the comment, I was resting the P510 on the dead carcass of the 1D Mk II. So the shots came out decent.
I do keep a monopod in the car, but because I had the big rig out I left it.
I changed the 100-400 to the 60D and continued shooting, HARD to tell the difference between the bridge and the high dollar gear.

With a light tripod that 50X will calm down. I know if anyone is steady enough to hand hold a 50X zoom

The reason I asked is because when I held my friend's P510, the lightweight-ness of it made it seem like wasn't a "real" camera. I'm just used to the substance of a Canon Rebel. I do know she has issues trying to use at full zoom, so the SX50 must really take some getting used to.

I recognize the feeling, I find it easier to hold the 50D steady then the 60D or P510.
More heft easier to steady, Had a hard time learning to shoot the M16 because I was used to heavy lever action rifles. same principle.
Practice and something to steady on, great shots await!

I do think the SX50 feels a little heavier than the P510 so that helps, but fully extended it doesn't take much movement to lose your subject!! And in my old age (dinosaur here) I am not getting any steadier!

< Old fart, bad back, I am liking the lighter gear these days.
Cheap monopod will get you a long way, and for a featherweight a light tripod will do the trick.
