We camped at Sand Island on the San Juan river just outside Bluff in Utah. The rockface behind us was covered in 700 year old Indian petroglyphs.

I love the second one, to me it feels like the ghosts of people and animals past.

Me too. There seems to be a bit more relief in the image. Nice photo.

Interesting! These are almost identical to those found in Capitol Reef National Park in southern Utah on Hwy. 24.

Unfortunately the two "possible" astronauts portrayed in No1 pic seem to have been used as target practice by other desert Rats !

You got me thinking - did I make a mistake? But no, it was definately Sand Island 5 miles outside Bluff on the San Juan River. We went to Capitol Reef, but didn't see any petroglyphs there. Not far between the two though. Also saw some on the road between Torrey and Henderson? Near the Fruita Campground.

These are just so cool...imagine if you will the people who made these. No pencils, no paper, or smart phones...just a lot of rocks.
Early man's attempt to record his surroundings. Your images capture this very nicely.

I have been in that area twice now, and did not stop at Sand Island. Looks like I need to make another trip out there. Love your first picture. You really captured the petroglyphs very well.
