I agree, the miners brought all the chagrin on themselves. Yes, the old mining communities were decimated, but more pits were closed under Labour administation and I don't recall any particular fuss being raised at the time!!!! I currently live in Yorkshire, and my Grandfather was a miner, (Brodsworth Colliery), There is no doubt that the miners hold 'Maggie responsible, but the fact is that economics were a bigger part than 'Maggie.

Brodsworth ... I was employed in the earth-moving industry for the first half of my working life... I visited Brodsworth colliery occasionally when doing repairs or maintenance on Caterpillar plant that we had on hire to the NCB. The closure of the pits affected us too but I still see it as necessary at the time .
Visited many other mines in that area too on a regular basis . Hey "lateron" ! you will recognise some of the ones that I can remember ...

Barnburgh, Barnsley main, Bentley, Bullcliffe, Dearn Valley, Grimethorpe, Hatfield, Hickleton, Houton Main, Manvers, Royston, Sharleston, South Kirby, North Gawber, Maltby ....

It is shameful that this government of the USA did not send someone of high ranking nature officially to the funeral of this wonderful lady whom I admired very much. I think the world has got this administration number, come the next election he will be gone thank god.

I would value your opinions on this ....

As you may realise by now I was a "thatcherite" and thought that she was the best prime minister this country ever had despite me being raised in the heart of the British coal mining community .......

.... so, maybe I'm looking at things from a different side of the table from some of ya that didn't like her (and, looking at some of these disrespectful posts that i don't think are worthy of a reply, some of ya that hated her ) ..

It hasn't gone unnoticed by the British people that despite the many many VIP's/Prime Ministers/ politicians/ ambassadors and dignitaries representing countries from around the globe, even some that we don't care for, that there was no noticeable "high ranking" presence in attendance at Lady Thatchers funeral from the our supposedly closest allie's the USA... Where was your first lady.... or the Clinton's ... or someone similar ?

... maybe I missed something ...? "tell me I did" !... but it left many people on this side of the pond (including myself) feeling a little dissapointed..
