I have a Canon 30 D and a 40 D. Just recently I am having problems with the 30D. The flash does not "pop" up anymore; it only rises very slowly. Also had trouble downloading to my iPad. Tried new fully charged battery with no positive result.
Considering taking it in for service call!
Thanks UHH contributors for any help.

I've owned a 30D for a number of years now with no problems so far. Possibly if it's slow to rise it could be a lubrication problem or whatever spring they use could be weak? Depending on how often you use the built in flash may or may not make it worthwhile to justify the cost of the repair. I suppose you could ask for a rough quote from the repair shop first? The download problem sounds like a separate issue, do you download from the camera or take out the memory card and put it in a card reader?

Thanks gbh. Trying to download directly from camera to iPad. Worked ok with 40d though.

Slow to rise sounds like a little 'Purple Pill' problem. I'm sorry, I just couldn't help myself. I'm a really old guy so I sometimes say inappropriate stuff like that.

FJ, I had a similar issue with a Canon 40D. I corrected it with lubrication. A toothpick and WD40. Squirt a small amount of WD40 into the cap from the WD40 can. Dip the end of a toothpick into the liquid WD40 to pick up just a drop. Apply the drop to all of the visible hinge points on the exposed flash mechanism. Close the flash and then activate and open the flash, close and repeat to work in the lubrication. Don't overdue the WD40, just lightly lubricate, cycle and repeat lube if necessary. Worked for me.
John
PS, be sure to lube the small release hooks, visible when the flash is open.

that sounds like a really good idea, I'll bear that in mind if I ever get the same problem - thanks !

I'm not sure whether you have a problem with the flash hanging up before it rises or if it actually moves slowly.
I had a 40D that was reluctant to release - sometimes it would and sometimes it wouldn't. I bought the camera like this, (with a healthy discount) and on examination decided that the flange around the recess the flash closes into was the problem. I cleaned this with alcohol and then with a couple of drops of sewing machine oil on a swab wiped the inside of the flange. The flash worked flawlessly from then on.
Thanks everyone for the responses. Never ceases to amaze me the help we all get from our UHH friends.
Again thanks to all.
