While stalking the marshlands the other morning I caught a flash of movement and noted this little preparing to fish for his breakfast. The rising sun seems to have caught his attention.

Thanks for looking.

Thanks for the comment. Shots like this relly make me appreciate the amazing bokeh on that 200-400mm lens.

If this forum exists to make the members better photographers then I would like to pose the following in regard to this photo. There are numerous comments attached which basically say the photo is beautiful, nailed, sharp and a host of other vague terms. If this photo "works for you" or you "like" it then attach a note as to WHY. What makes this photo work, or please feel free to say why it doesn't work. If we can establish a series of ideas as to why a photo works or doesn't work, then we can begin to change our photographic process to reach these ideals. Later today, after folks have had time to consider the photo, I'll explain why I took it and what I like and what I dislike about the photo.

Come on folks, jump in...

This is so well composed that everything takes my eye to his eye and beak. I wish I could look "around the corner" of the frame and see what he is looking at off frame, although you did say the sunrise caught his eye. If birds can have expressions, his is "intense." This is what is working for me here. Also I love the color contrast.
Incidentally, all positive and sometimes negative comments, however short, need to be appreciated and acknowledged.
Looking forward to your later comments today.

I already posted that it was very beautiful, if you want more, then I can give it. :-)

At first glance, the photo as a whole, was very pleasing to my eyes...beautiful complimentary colors.

I like the direction of the soft light and the fact that the bird is looking into it.

Nice soft bokeh.

Composition great.

That one curving branch he is sitting on adds a lot, rather than in the midst of many, which would cause distraction and clutter. Also like that all the leaves on that branch are pointing upward.

Also like that there are so many colors evident on the bird, itself; especially the soft pink/purple.

To nitpick it apart, the only things I would change is that the bird filled the frame more. Also that the dividing line between the colors/bokeh on the left half was not in the center, cutting the left side (actually looking at it fully) cuts the whole photo in half.

There are 3 completely different bokeh visible, while I think that 2 blended or not so distinctly centered would make for a more well-rounded or balanced photo. Like on the right side...there is some green coming down and some blue going up, blending out a middle demarcation line.

In the end, I still think it's a very beautiful photo!
