Once a month on the last Friday, bicyclists gather beneath the Picasso statue in Daley Plaza to ride through downtown. They start to gather around 5:30 PM and about an hour later, they ride as a group through the streets of downtown with police escort to block traffic.
They do this year round. Yes, through the winter (brave souls).
www.criticalmasschicago.orgI have not participated, but, walk past this from work to the train.
There is an entire circus of bicycle types, people types, and sometimes, even costumes. There may have been only one or two hundred yesterday, but during the summer, there are many hundreds and the spectacle of the bike styles is amazing.
The gathering
the colorful things are the letters spelling out PICASSO (temp for museum a few blocks away)
The Art Institute has a special display for Picasso
Picasso's wife (the statue) looks on
Unique bike
Old timey bike
NOT the lead dog
Great, but it ain't Chicago's wife. That's his dog. (Really - he made a sculpture of his dog, and gave it to Chicago. Joke's on them.)

When they installed the giant letters, the local news revealed that it was his wife. I'm just sayin'. (Repeating)

I think it is a great idea to put all bicycle riders in one place. it makes the roads a lot safer.

Except for pedestrians on the sidewalks. The "Bikers" think they own the sidewalks as well as the roads and don't care who they run over. Even though it is a law that no one over the age of 12 years is allowed to ride a bike on sidewalks..especially in the Central Business District.

Give them riding rinks like they use for training horses.

Ever walked across the Golden Gate Bridge in the Summer time? Bicycle riders on the bridge have the attitude that they own it...They get downright rude if you do not get out of their way so that they can ride unrestrained.

the Riverwalk here is the same way which is surprising because being rude here is not the norm.
