Well, it IS necessary to update software to be able to read all the new cameras. There may be some exceptions, but every new model from any mfg. needs all the raw converters to update their program to read the file - certainly to be able to get the most from that file. Hardly just a Nikon thing.

I keep forgetting I only have Photoshop CS3, which I just got a couple of years ago (I really can't afford to spend an arm and a leg every year to get the latest version). Too bad they don't have a inexspensive plug-in or something, but as soon as a new $1000 version comes out they abandon everybody who has an older version. I am a caveman as far as they are concerned, now that they are up to CS5 or more, but I guess you can understand that! As to why NX2 will not open your NEF files, Nikon says each model camera may have a different kind of NEF...if your camera is newer than than your version of NX2, that would explain it, everything new is automatically incompatible with previous software, how else can they rip you off for more money? But if you bought your camera new, it should have a version of NX2 compatible with it. This whole thing with myriads of file extensions and compatabilties is a quagmire (a real mess), but someone is getting rich on it. We however, are screwed, unless we are independently wealthy.
