E mail instant messenger

On 3/22/13, Yahoo cancelled their instant messenger without warning. They gave options on how to up grade to a new kind of system. Fine, when I try to follow their instructions it shows my browser is non supportive (or some language to that effect). Perhaps this is just another benefit of switching to windows 8 when my old computer crashed and burned. Tried switching to Fire Fox which was one of their options...still no help. This would not be such an inconvenience in general, but I communicate with several professional photographers on the instant messenger to help each other out with technical assistance. So now I hope you can see the seriousness here  Any suggestions :?: Windows 8 should come with "Preparation H"

Yes I down loaded Mozilla, no help... Though I'm not sure if it is the "Thunderbird" will double check. Thanks for your reply. :D

Messenger is definitely being eliminated, Yahoo is trying to get everyone to switch their service to Skype on April 8th. IM's will still be free, but Video messaging will now be through Skypes "pay-to-play" fee service, after the 30 day free trial.

Try completely uninstalling messenger and reinstalling the latest version. Might help.

Thank you, after messing with it again this afternoon, I got it running. Must admit, I don't care for it as much as I did the original version. It does not show if the other person is typing, and it also takes up the entire page, so I cannot read other e mails as I am talking on the messenger. Another example of ruining a good thing that didn't need fixing. Enough venting  .

Thanks for the reply pbearperry, video calls at this time are of no interest to me. The original messenger was nice and simple. So was 36 cents per gallon Sunoco 260 gasoline for my go fast chevy. Opps..there I go again venting while I reminisce. :)

Skype Overview

.
Skype™ - © Microsoft
Skype provides a top tier voice, video, and instant messaging experience that keeps getting better. Sign-up and setup are a breeze, and the software supports virtually any webcam or headset on the market. The interface takes minutes (at most) to learn, and it's even easy to test voice and video quality with a free automated service. Ridiculously cheap premium telephony features also abound for business users and international travelers.

The Basics - Voice, Video, and Contacts
When most people think Skype, they think free voice and video calling. Those two features remain the core of what Skype does, but newer versions have added direct file transfer, screen sharing, instant messaging, SMS, and even business telephony.

Part of Skype's attraction as a communications tool is its broad user base (over 30 million). Thankfully, the software makes it easy to find and connect with the right people. Users can search for one another by email, phone number, Skype name, and full name.
