One of my first shots using my new Canon 400mm f/5,6 lens, a squirrel outside playing with my cat. The lens has already given my great joy.

Looks ok at that size, any chance of a full sized version for us pixel peepers please? :D

It's a lens I was considering and any info you can give will be appreciated.
Was this hand held?
What settings were used?

Thanks in advance

It was hand held at ISO 250 with f/5.6, or wide open for this lens, and a shutter speed of 1/250. I was looking at the Sigma 150-500 but decided that when it comes to a tack shot how can you go wrong with a Canon L lens. In daylight hours you can get away with a higher ISO, hand held wide open or slightly a larger f/stop. I will be using a triopod and gimbal for most of my shots, by it is nice to know that I can get away with no tripod if it is daylight hours and I bump up the ISO with a f/stop that is close to wide open. I attached a larger size for you to view. Thanks for looking at my photo.

Thanks for posting a bigger image. It does look sharp with plenty of fine detail and the fact you used it hand held with a not too high ISO sounds promising to me.
One final question, which camera do you use?

Look forward to seeing more shots using this lens :D

I used the Mark ll, one other note the Canon 1.4 extender does fit on the lens but you have to use manual focus.

Very crisp and sharp! I don' know what you had in mind when you bought that lens, but, it is a fantastic lens for shooting birds in flight! I've read all the reviews and would love to own one just for that purpose :-D

really nice pic..I'm surprised at how dark that squirrel is! Guess the ones I grew up with were all Grey squirrels.

I don't really know how it works, but I have seen both colours, I am not sure if it is the season or a different type of squirrel. All I know is that this one drives my cat nuts!

Quite good - I have recently purchased a used Canon 400d and am looking for a used 300 to 400 lens for my wildlife shots - I have seen some on Androm quite reasonable.

Just for fun I took a shot of the moon tonight to show you what I can do with this lens. I added an 1.4 Canon extender and used a Canon 30D with 1.6 crop factor and was able to achieve this photograph with cropping in Photoshop [ISO 100/ f/14/ 125th]
