Norfolk Island - Brutal past, now paradise in the Pacific.
We had a holiday in Norfolk Is., Australian owned but partly self-governed. In the 1800's it was a cruel convict colony, now it's a quiet, extremely laid back secluded spot. The crew from "Mutiny on the Bounty" landed here with their Tahitian wives and a pidgeon English form of Tahitian is still spoken. Cars must give way to cows, everybody - and I mean everybody, waves (even if it's one finger off the steering wheel). It's like stepping back in time and we loved it.
The convict ruins at Slaughter Bay.
One of the many headstones.

Thanks wildwing. Such a fascinating cemetary to explore - if you like to do that.

Yes I know. You have to hold your emotions in check when visiting Norfolk, the history of the penal colony is very sad.
