Pounder you asked a question and received the only answer possible: "Who cares? To begin with, 1.2 billion Catholics care. If you're a true agnostic than the whole question becomes irrelevant so why ask the question in the first place? "

Treehugger is exactly correct in his summation of this tread. Question asked and answered.

BTW it is extremely rude and bad taste to make fun of someone’s religion. Freedom of religion is one of our basic rights.

Many people would disagree that it's rude and bad taste to make fun of someone's religion. Setting that aside, though, how does making fun of someone's religion curtail their freedom of religion in any way?

The way the media covered the news of a new Pope and the fact the "bookies" had betting lines on who it would be leaves me with one question. Who cares? Sounds more like the Super Bowl. Being what's best described as agnostic it will have no effect on my life whatsoever. And even if I were Catholic I still don't know why it matters. Maybe someone can explain it. Keep it simple since I have ATD or something like that. Basically I get bored really fast and don't need to know the entire history of Christianity or Catholicism. This is a simple question and I'm looking for a simple answer. I'll ask again. "What difference does it make who the Pope is."

I'm not Catholic and I respect your inquisitiveness. A lot of people do care as to the role of Pope and some folks could care less. This role has gone back to before a lot of us were even born which I'm sure you know since you weren't born yesterday. Every religious institution has a leader and that is all it is.
I'm saddened by the fact that some of the replies to your post came across as retaliatory even if they believed your post had no significance. I find a few of the members get a little ornery on here for no reason whatsoever since the idea behind a forum is to present many thoughts and ideas. All the best to you.

I grew up catholic but have not practiced the religion in years, so I have no great love for the church. Having said that the catholic church has an enormous effect on the world even if it does not effect you directly. It educates more people then any institution on earth. It also runs two of the largest charities in the Catholic relief fund and Catholic charities. It is a leader in the pro life movement and to them it means all of life not just pre- natal. I know there are a lot of problems with the church but give it its due. It needs a strong leader and hopefully they have found one.

I believe you meant to say ADD (Attention Deficit Disorder) or was it that you couldn't keep your mind open long enough to remember that?

Yes I did mean ADD which I really believe is lack of parenting skills but it's a convenient excuse to just drug kids instead of actually raising them. Now back to the original question. What difference does it make. There are also a a few billion Muslims in the world. They don't care.

Wow, you sound like a really upright, wonderful person. Hope you're not a parent and hope you never become one.

BINGO! Well said, good advise. Good Day.

Good question Pounder! I won't expound, but I suggest you read-up on the 'City of seven hills', (yes, in the Bible!), and learn the significance of the pope, etc. Might be important, even to a supposedly 'agnostic'.

My response was meant as a warning. We've all heard that sage piece of advise, "Never argue religion, and never argue politics." Just go back to Pounder's very first response, he was trying to turn it in to both.

He's not interested in a discussion, he just wants to belittle people for their viewpoint. He wants to bait people into playing his game, his rules.

I was not making fun of a religion. I just asked a simple question based on a news story. I don't question the position of Pope. My question is does it matter which of the Cardinals was chosen. It's likely they are on the same unlike a political election where you normally have two very different views. At least the Catholics didn't have to put with the mud slingging and back stabbing. At least I don't think so.

Who cares? I was catholic but now I'm just pissed off with the church.
This is an organization that is steeped in scandal that needs change, big time. So they elect a 76 year old as their head doing it in secret, announcing it by using smoke signals and a language that is extinct.... Go figure!!!

There are three things you don't discuss in an open forum with total strangers. Sex, religion and politics. Nobody ever wins. Too many things to discuss. I agree the original poster was just looking to stir the pot. He's not an Agnostic he's an Antagonist! Be gone before somebody drops a house on you too!

I might add. Was anyone as annoyed as me of the constant news coverage when Michael Jackson and Whitney Houston died? I was waiting for the executive order to lower the flags to half mast.

I agree in that it doesn't make a difference which guy wears the biggest funny hat. They all adhere to an outdated dogma so it really makes no difference who the Pope is or was. Once he is Pope he tows the line and continues the psychosis that is the Catholic religion.
