I killed....
my Nikon D50 with an 18-200 lens - dropped. I am sick to my stomach.... I'm taking them in tomorrow to see if they can be repaired. I have a feeling it will cost too much to have the camera repaired. In the meantime, should I look for another D50 or a D90. I can't afford too much. Any advice is welcome.

As you mentioned, the D90.
It was a great camera. Twice the camera the D50 ever was in more than megapixels. Shoots video, CMOS sensor, better build quality...
I'm assuming you want to save some money.
Same sensor as the D90 in a better body- get the D300s.
Looking for something even better?
If you can find a new or refurb that fits your budget, the D7000 is probably the best DX camera on the market.
Find out what your lens is going to cost to repair if possible.
The D50 is good camera and you're familiar with it. The D90 -- we still have one in the house and use it almost every day -- is a terrific camera. But, you'll need some financial elbow room for a lens and the D50 is no slouch.
Dropping a terrific camera is a terrible experience and having a good cry might be a good idea.
Good luck Barbara.

Sent my D-200 to a local store who sent it to someone and did a lousy job,
Dropped my D-700 and took it directly to Nikon repair (El Segundo) and they did a beautiful job. They are not exactly speedy but..
Moral of story: Send it only to Nikon. Is it a Nikon lens?
I would send to factory vs having a local camera shop attempt it.
Check your homeowners policy . Who knows?

Hey Doc ..... what appears to be damaged ..... pics?
Sorry to hear, such a shame and to replace is so expensive. I shutter to think of damaging my camera let alone the lens. I pulled out of savings to get my new DSLR so I could enjoy retiring and could not afford to replace it. Good luck in getting it repaired or replaced.

So sorry! That is awful!
I have to remind myself to put the strap around my neck all the time.
My daughter bought a refurbished Nikon that she loves.
Saved lot and got a nice upgrade body.
Find an approved repair shop. I did the same thing with my Nikon d-80. Cost was around $350 but that was 4 years ago. Camera has worked fine since.

Was it an expensive lens? I always tell people to check your home owner's insurance. Even if you have a $500 deductible if it cost $100, you'll have something to help with repair or replace. Since I've gotten old and clumsy, I've begun taking accident protection with expensive purchases, and it does pay off.
