Has anybody tried the "lightsource" from Gary Fong? I bought one last month and haven't taken it off on of my flash units. It's an "under $50" piece that fits on top of your flash unit. this photo of keely..she is about 8" from that white wall and there's no shadow, the soft light wraps around her. I have been amazed with this unit because before i found this unit, i never used a flash unit on the camera.

anybody else tried one?

I've been looking at a diffuser for my speedlight, just not sure what I want.

i also have the rogue flash benders and the large one is great. i have taken large group shots with it and it works awesome...

this gary fong lightsource is also great.

up to now, all my flash photography has been off camera. with these 2 different diffusers..it has opened a new world for me. never thought i would be using on camera flash.

I use something that looks like it was moulded from a milk jug - don't know the brand. It was about $20 and is shaped to fit my SB600. It works pretty well. I bought it at the local camera store (a DC-based local chain).

Gary sent me one of his Collapsible Lightspheres just before it came out on the market and I use it all the time. I've lost the dome and I need to get another one, but otherwise I use it even outdoors. He's got a number of videos on Youtube showing his products. He and Melissa are on Facebook and he's great about answering any questions.

Never used a Gary Fong...anything. A friend was using one a couple of weeks ago; finally saw his pics on Flickr and was pretty impressed.

Being on a very tight budget, I either either bounce or use homemade modifiers.

Not familiar with the "Lightsource" but before purchasing consider the Lumiquest bounce reflector. It's a version of the old press photographers white card attached to a flash , combines ceiling bounce and soft direct flash, Lumiquest is better looking more durable item but it is also an easy to make at home unit

Hello fellow Texan,
Here's is some info. on the Gary Fong diffuser. I feel it is overpriced for what it is. http://improvephotography.com/2545/gary-fong-lightsphere-collapsible-review/

I picked up a Sto-Fen Omni Bounce diffuser for less than half the price of the Gary Fong unit, and I am very pleased with it. Hope you are enjoying the cooler weather up in Dallas. Woke up to 48 degrees in Houston! Love it!!

Gary makes some really nice units but if you want to take it up one notch here is another option. I have Gary's as well as a Stofen and prefer the Graslon 4100D over all others.

Thanks for the link. I like the Gralson setup a lot. I may have to ask Santa Clause for one!

All of Fong's stuff is overpriced in my opinion. The only reason I have the Collapsible is he sent it to me. I use it and it works fine but I still like my little Lumiquest softbox for the Speedlight...I'm just reluctant to put Velcro around the SB800. I can still use it on my old SB28 and it works just fine especially for a little fill light while it triggers the sb800 off camera.

One of the most important thing is to move the flash further away from the axis of the lens. Thus a flash bracket is needed. Using bounce cards, Gary Fong or Graslon will realy work better because the shadows drop further behind the subject and disappear from view.

The next step is to add a main light to the right and get a 3:1 ratio with the flash at the camera being 1.

Yep a Flash Bracket is a great idea but the second light is not always practical in all situations. If I can setup lights I use softboxes and real flash units. I'm a bad Strobbist
