Very new to taking pictures

Hi, I am very new to taking pictures. I have a close friend that is a professional and have helped her during weddings but have never really been behind the camera. I got a Nikon D5100 for my birthday this weekend. I am so green I sometimes feel overwhelmed. I find that I get lost in all the terms and am looking to learn a lot. Hope that I can get some support here and some information. Here are a few pics I took, Im on day 4!

Welcome to UHH, Heidi. I am sure you can get lots of tips and advice here...lots of Nikon users. Have you looked into possibly getting a book or two on exposure, shutter and aperture? I think that would be a big help if you're unfamiliar with the basic terms. Also post any questions you may have.

Thanks... I do get pointers and support from my friend. She talks me through f stop, iso, and all the other techie terms. Plus after watching her shoot for years I have been able to get some pointers on angles and what looks good.
