If you are talking about the background colour for a new file it's simply a case of clicking the top coloured square at the bottom of the tools menu on the left side and choosing the colour you want. Then left click on the paint bucket tool to select it and left click on your background to fill it with your selected colour.

If you want to change the background of an existing image, Google is your friend where you can find tutorials like this one http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EzNeFK-6O3I

A great way to do it is to use the "quick selection" tool.

Drag over the part you want to keep.

The click "refine edge" and choose the settings that yield the best looking result. Here are what I use (see screen shot) but I have to stress..that the best results will come with a good solid color background that contrasts with the subject.

Every situation is different, so one size fits all doesn't really work when talking about compositing.

Can you post the photo you are wondering about (store original)

No I just want to change the color of an existing background. There must be a simple way of doing it with affecting the rest of the photo?

Try using the selection tool to select the birds instead of the background. The quick selection tool should work pretty good because there is a high contrast between the background and the birds. You need to zoom in pretty close and after the initial selection is done go back and fine tune it by either using the refine edge or the + & - on the tool to get the selection to the edge of the bird. If you worked by selecting the bird, then after you are satisfied with the selection you MUST invert the selection BEFORE you change the color or else you will change the color of the bird.

I worked on your photo and had NO problem selecting the background or changing the color. It must be something that you are doing. If you Would you write down the steps you are taking perhaps we could figure out what is going wrong, or even better if you would post a picture of how it looks when it goes bad and tell us what you were trying to do.

With an image like yours with such a good contrast between the subject and the nicely blurred background the selection tool is a pretty quick and easy way of achieving your desired outcome. Once I have selected the bird I inverted the selection then expanded it by 2 pixels as it never cuts out exactly. Copied that selection to a new layer. Then using Image ---> Adjustments --> Hue/Saturation with Colorize ticked I adjusted the sliders until I got the look I wasa after.

This was my quick effort with no refine edge or brush size changing, could be better with more time and effort put in.

The other posters are right...it took literally, 20 seconds to take the background out in PS...select>refine edge>ok.

And it was done.

after you have the subject selected and you have refined the selection with the refine edge tool on the output box choose new layer. This will have the subject ion it's own layer and then choose the layer that the subject came from in the layers panel and change your background to what you want. It won't matter if you cover up the original subject you will have the selected subject on it's own layer as long as that layer is on top of the layer stack you should be fine.

I am old fashioned, I just cut the center part out and place it on a background of my choice. Susie

After you invert the selection DO NOT deselect the marching ants. Bring up a hue & saturation adjustment layer, check the colorize box, and use the hue slider to change the color. Whatever is selected will be the ONLY thing that changes. If you have nothing selected then the whole picture changes. Hope that helps you a little.

Good answers above but this takes practice. Try looking at youtube.com for a video of how to do it.
