Going to replace my panasonic dmctz3. Anyone have a Nikon p500 or Panasonic DMC GF3? Need opinions on super zooms that are not DSLRS

Not to add to your stress, LOL, you might also want to take a look at Canon's new SX40. I just purchased this camera and while it has it's short comings (no full manual control for me) I think it's a great camera. The Nikon has no hot shoe. Deal breaker for me. Don't know anything about the GF3.

Here is one of the first shots I took. Almost full zoom (optical and digital, hand held):

Great pic, even if it is a pesky squirrel

Take a look at snapsort.com. This is the most thorough and well- designed site for camera comparison shopping that I've seen. I have been using the lumix dmc fz100 for about a year. I've been very happy with results, long zoom, good macro. It's light and small, great for travel. Good luck

If you're looking for an inexpensive Panasonic bridge camera chek out KEH.com. There's a 10mp DMC-FZ50 for sale that does a lot of things. It has a 12x optical zoom and has a screw mount on the lens to accept 55mm accessories, including a 2x or 4x zoom extender if you desire. There's also a macro accessory that eliminates the 5cm minimum distance problem in macro.
Why a bridge camera? Because a GOOD DSLR costs more than I can afford and I'd rather have a high end bridge camera than a low end Yugoflex with Itchykitty lenses.

Thanks for letting a newbie in. I have owned several point and shoot cameras. I listed a sx30 is on ebay yersterday, that if you are interested take a look. Here is a couple of must haves for me when I'm looking for a camera.
1. a hot shoe.
2. A articulating screen.
3. ease of switching to manual exporsure control.
4. good battery life.
5. Sharp optics

I have a P500 and I love it. I read lots of reviews on it before I purchased it to make sure I was going to get what I wanted. I was looking to step up a little from my small p&s, but didn't want to go to full dslr because that just wasn't something I would be able to afford in the long run with buying extra lenses. I think I have taken some amazing photos on it, but in the end it is your choice as to what brand you think is best and what would work best for your uses of the camera.

So how do you fell about having to charge the battery in the camera? That was my main concern with this camera

Thanks

It really doesn't bother me at all. I just plug it in before I go to bed and it is charged when I wake up. I am looking into getting some extra batteries and an external charger for it so I can have extra batteries on hand and can charge them out of the camera, but that is just me. (I took the camera to a concert and got a little snap happy and ran the battery down before the end of the concert; although I did get over 300 pics out of the battery before it died so I was happy with that. I don't want a repeat of that happening if I go to another concert.) For now I am fine with charging the battery in the camera.

Thanks for your input. I am going to Africa in January, and I don't want to find myself with a dead camera. I haven't checked into the battery charger, but would figure they would have something. Hope you enjoyed the concert.

Hi, I am new to this forum.. I am looking for a new camera myself. One of the cameras Im looking at is the Canon SX40 and the Sony DSC HX101.. I like the Canon and the zoom. Should I be concerned about the low pixels on the 2.7 scene? I dont understand about Raw that it doesnt have...I would like to take online classes also..I now own the sony cyber shot with 7x zoom.. Can you tell me more about why the Canon SX40 is better than the other....thank you so much for your time. Im disabled veteran and looking to ocupy my mind..... thanks Lauren

I bought a Sony Cybershot HX100V, but haven't had a lot of time to use it yet. Just getting familiar with the bells and whistles. The RAW thing isn't important to me, but guess it is handy for easier editing. Going to a photo club meeting today, so will see what the others think of my purchase.
