My external hard drive was label the "K" drive and it changed to the "L" drive. Now elements 6 does not recognize it. Can someone tell me how to change it back to the "K" drive? I tried changing the USB port but that does not help. I am thinking that this might have something to do with my thumbnails changing from the photo ID # to the date... Any help will be appreciated....

Good advice from MS & Robert-Photos. One thing I might add. If you are trying to change the drive letter to one that another drive is using, you might have to change the other drive letter to something like Z, to free up the K.
You can also unplug some of your other drives like a flash drive and external HDs and replug them in.
Did you recently add another hard drive or flash drive?

Doubt this. Drive letters change when their attachment points get freaky. Sometimes things just go wacky and two USB ports, for example, will hot up and energize their drives differently, and the drives will switch letters around. It all depends on in what order things come online. Sometimes, a USB port will go missing, and the only way to get it back is to turn off the PC completely, and unplug the power cord. This lets all the motherboard SRAM bleed off and get reinitialized. Give it 30 seconds, plug back in, and try again. I had an old Compaq Presario that used to lose a USB port every now and then..

Successful use of the computer is essential to photography.
Your question is a good photo related one!
Thanks for everyones help with this, I turned my computer off and unpluged my printer which had adoped the "K" drive and my external hard drive. Then I turned my computer back on and plugged in my hard drive and then followed the link posted by robert-photos and it worked great. I think the reason it changed to start with is that I unpluged the hard drive from the computer. I guess that is when the printer took over the "K" drive. It is back the way I wanted it. Thanks again for the help......
Go Mac and your problem will go away along with alot of problems you may be having. Mac goes by the name you give the drive no mater where you plug it in or whay else you have as long as every thing has a different name. Once you go Mac you don't go back
I have heard from several people that MAC is a great system........
