Hello all! My name is Deb and I'm so happy to have found this forum. Ever since college, I've always wanted to learn photography - on my bucket list, as it were. :D Well, I finally decided that there's no time like the present so I bought the Nikon D5100 package from Costco and now I'm terrified to use it! :shock: I've signed up for a photography course that is to begin next week and I'm super stoked to start learning! I have so enjoyed looking at all the photos posted here and seeing the world thru all of your eyes. I think that's my greatest fear - that I won't have a photographic eye to create interested pictures. Here are my first two attempts using my new camera - of course, my girls! Molly is a year and a half old bagle (bassett/beagle cross) and Remy is a year and a half old terrier/poodle cross. I was blown away with the resolution of the photos - imagine what I can when I actually KNOW what I'm doing! LOL

Great photos Deb...your girls are excellent models! Good luck with your photography course. You'll be surprised how creative you will get...and with the simplest of subjects.

your photos of your poochies are fine. Heres a bunch of helpfull advice. first set your camera to automatic and start shooting. the best way to learn how to swim is jump in the pond. as you progress in your course you will gain the confidence to take the camera off automatic. second post your photos here no more than 3 at a time. listen to what advice you get, apply it shoot some more post agaain repeat. Third in the end the only opinion of your photos that matters is yours. fourth shoot what interests you hobbies etc that you have a passion for, that passion will show in your work. fifth subscribe to popular photography magazine and save the issues. not just forr the articles but look criticaly at the photos. what did you like, dislike how would you shoot that photo differently.

Thanks sinatraman - point taken and subscription ordered. It does help for me to see the way other people photograph - I've already started to look at things differently. Definitely going to be a learning curve, that's for sure. Thanks for all the suggestions.

@ books I believe every photographer should own and reread. I am not the only one who recomends these books and if i had a dolllar for everytime i do recomend them, I could afford that new Nikon D-3 I want. Both books are by Bryan Peterson and are available on amazon.com both new and used. The first is titled "understanding exposure" in easy to understand english and with lots of awesome photos, bryan will teach you about fstops iso shutter speeds and their relationships to each other. He will show you how to not only get the technicaly correct exposure but how to find the most creative exposure as well. The second book is titled "learning to see creatively" these two books have impacted the quality of my work like an exploding h bomb. I have learned to look at photo oportunities from all sorts of angles. lately I have been shooting potholes, cracked sidewalks, unusal markings on pavements etc. here are a few of my photos influenced by those two books.

Well, Deb, you are off to a great start. Your dog photos are super. Looks like you already have what it takes to be a great photographer. All you need is the knowledge, and you will soon get that in your photography course. Good luck to you!

I am right where you are. I bought a d5100 at Costco a few days ago and I am going to take classes very soon. I wanted to be able to photograph my bed and breakfast. Then I want to be able to get good enough to do other bed and breakfast.
I found this is a great fourm to learn from. I find people on this fourm are very kind to each other. I love it they tell you what you need to learn too. I was on a few other forums just reading and boy were they crabby.

beegal the same advice I gave deb i give you. see above posts. I will ad dont be afraid to expierement. The big advantage with digital is that it costs you nothing to take the shot. film costs 50 cents each time you press the shutter between cost of film and processing. dont delete anything untill you download to your computer. you never know .

Sinatraman, thank you so much for the advice on the books. I've received both of them now and they are awesome! My photography class is moving right along - daunting but I'm learning! I can see real quick that this is going to become an obsession of mine! LOL Thanks for the help!!! :D

beegal, read the post above about the books that sinatraman recommended. They are awesome and are a treasure trove of information. I heartily recommend them as well. This guy lays everything out in an easy to understand manner. I really like the way he explains things!
