Capture One Pro

One of my clients is a professional photographer. I was visiting him yesterday, and we got around to talking about his equipment and software. I mentioned that another of my clients, whom he knows, is using Lightroom, and I asked what software he was using, along with Photoshop. He said he uses Capture One Pro, and he found its treatment of color superior to other software. His computers are all Macs, not that that makes any difference here.

I was wondering if others here have experience with Capture One, and what your thoughts are about its strengths.

I have a copy and I have used it, but I don't need it.
It falls short in too many areas and offers little not available elsewhere.
If you are using the PhaseOne cameras and digital backs, then you may be persuaded to try their software....

Regardless of cost, I find Adobe's Lightroom 4.0 (and Photoshop) to be significantly better and offers far more features.

As in so many things, you tend to prefer what you have become familiar with, and while you can tout its advantages, you have little to compare iy with. So many product testimonials and endorsements by individuals are like that. So always bring a few grains of salt and seek other opinions, as you have done here.

See the following Capture One Pro review for another opinion:

Thanks for the response. Heading for the article you linked to now.

EDIT: Hmmm... quite a different take from my client's. I think he does have at least one camera with a related back, which may account for it.

Anyway, thanks again.

I have an addiction to keep trying out these Raw Converters and currently am up to date with
Lightroom, like it
DXO, not a fan of it
Capture One Pro, it's good but Lightroom beats it
Silkypix, my first choice

All of them have their quirks so far as getting accustomed to using them.
But all are capable of producing good photographs. What makes a big difference to all of us is that they offer so many choices for color rendition and sharpness etc. By comparison to the days of film when your only choice was between a few companies products.
We are also left with enormous choices of monitors and color correction of those and computers with systems which also produce big variations in color.
Then there are printers and profiles
Printer papers.
Etc. Etc.Etc.
So overall we are really down to seeing what we believe to be a really great end product but it might not look so good on our neighbours computer............

And of course, Silkypix comes free with a Lumix G. At the price of these editing progs, it is worth considering when choosing a new camera.

I have never used Silkypix and know next to nothing about it.
Now I'm curious. What makes it your first choice? Performance? Options? Results?

Regarding preference of Silky over Light room is really an operation preference.
LIghtroom is aggressive in picture storage and for ever trying to upload my pictures and I prefer my filing system, that's really my pet peeve with Light room.
Silky has no filing system trying to impose it's self into my life.

Silky has excellent colour default, slightly muted if anything, its sharpening is very good at default also. The noise removal again is not aggressive but its default s good, HDR is one slider and pulls out the details in shadow and black very well.

I am retained by a catalogue company which produces stationery products, wedding invites and other such items, the shots are produced in the first instance for CMYK catalogue printing and colour correction is of the utmost importance in this respect.

Have to capture paper quality, embossing, metallic finishes, high gloss pearls silver etc.
So I don,t want heavy sharpening, heavy handed noise removal and heavy saturated colours. Lightroom defaults gives me a little too much of everything and Phase One's Capture One Pro usually an excessive amount of over correction and saturation.
Silky also allows for easy file deleting and easy lenses corrections without having to have profiles etc.
Not trying to do a sell job, so I'll stop there, if anyone wants ,more input I'll be glad to chat more.

Thanks. I'll have to look further into Silky.
BTW, just FYI: Your observations about Lightroom are all adjustable settings which can be whatever you want. There are no defaults per se.

I used to use Capture One Express. Amazing results but the workflow does not suit what I do, I think it would work well for studio photographers though.

Good point. That is where most medium format cameras tend to reside most of the time.
