Hi Nick, and welcome to UHH. Can't offer any advice on Nikon...(I'm a Canon shooter :) ), but glad you joined. I used to live in Concord..moved to SR several years ago. Looking forward to seeing some of your photos.

Play with your settings. Don't be afraid to try manual. I've learned how to make a dark decrepit house at dusk look like it's in the bright of day. I've also learned how to shoot straight into the sun at 2pm for gorgeous pictures over water that look like night. Shoot the same thing with many changes in your ISO, shutter speed and f/stop. Notice the difference. Have fun experimenting.

If you're not comfortable taking (people) portraits with manual settings, use the P setting until you do get comfy. It picks some of your most important settings for you.

And ask a lot of questions on here. It seems the members are incredibly kind and helpful! Welcome and congratulations on your new camera purchase.

Hi & welcome!. I also have D3100. Get David Busch's book on the D3100 called " Field guide for Nikon D3100. Many other books out there. Read your manual. I know, a tough tech read.

Welcome David. I just joined 2 weeks ago and also have a D3100. Looked at many different books, web sites, etc. but found just messing with the settings is just as good. Night shots are my toughest.

As you said playing around with settings. If you are in manual, just remember your basic "go to...home" settings. ISO 200, Shutter speed 200 and f/stop 6.3 or 7.1 . I've shot daytime bright mid day sun, directly INTO the sun making it look almost dark out, but catching the sun reflection over the lake, by just playing with settings. You can get some awesome stuff, if you try. Dusk pictures looking almost mid day. Mid day looking late evening. Have fun. Nothing is set in stone for what is right and wrong with a photo or settings.

Hello...My name is Randy and I just picked up a D3100 after years of being idle. My other camera is an Olympus OM-1 so that tells you how long I've been away. I like the D3100 but just learned it doesn't have bracketing..Oh well I'll just make do for now....
